Fomapan and Diafine

Fomapan 200

This is an exposure test of Fomapan 200 (developed in Diafine 3mins A + 3mins B) taken with a Mamiya M645 1000S on 120 roll film. I placed the bushed to the right of the lamp post in Zone III.

The histogram (taken from the unmodified scans; the photos shown here are sharpened and the white and black points have been adjusted) shows an increasing compression of the values from EI100 to EI400. (Of course, exposing an ISO200 film at EI400 doesn't really make sense if there's a higher speed film available anyway, but this is just for fun.)

The grain is quite negliable at all speeds, but the shadow details decay pretty quickly, which makes EI100 my preferred rating.

Fomapan 200 Very Low EI

I accidently exposed those shots at EI 12, 25 and 50 (120 roll film in my Mamiya M645 1000S, developed in Diafine 3min A + 3min B, the are to the left of the power outlets was placed in Zone III) but am quite pleased with the results. The negatives are quite thick, so I don't know how well they could be printed (I haven't had time to try that yet).

The histograms are taken from the unmodified scans (no sharpening, no curve tweaking) while the three photos shown here have been sharpened a bit and the white / black points have been adjusted.

In the upper right corner you can a 100% crop of some detail so you can check out the grain, which is basically not there at those speeds. Looking at the histograms also shows that there is virtually no difference in the latitude of those three shots.

Fomapan 400 Medium EI

This is an exposure test of Fomapan 400 developed in Diafine (3mins A + 3mins B), taken with a Mamiya M645 1000S. I placed the back of the chair in the background on Zone III. The histogram is taken from the unmodified scans of the negatives and it clearly shows a compression of the values which is not too big from EI200 to EI400 but very noticable in the EI800 case. The small square in the upper right shows a 100% crop which can be used to compare the grain.

I think the overall image quality at EI200 is excellent, so that is probably going to be my preferred speed for shooting Fomapan 400 (in Diafine). The EI400 shot has slightly more grain but still looks good. EI800 is still usable, but the grain is noticeable and the midtones are already quite compressed.

Fomapan 400 High EI

This is an exposure test of Fomapan 400 (developed in Diafine 3mins A + 3mins B) taken with a Mamiya M645 1000S on 120 roll film. I placed the dark side of the lamp in Zone III.

After quite pleasing results with an EI800 exposure in the last test, I decided to push my look and try even higher speeds. Not suprisingly, the grain gets pretty bad at EI3200 and the photo loses pretty much all detail in the shadows and midtones.

The EI1600 is still acceptable which I find quite impressive considering the slow "real" speed of Fomapan 400.
